this is why we never tire of cupcakes
You’d think after (how many?) years of cupcake mania we’d be ready to move on the next thing (macarons, anyone?). But with so many delicious little cupcake destinations all over town just perfectly placed for a sweet stop on your San Francisco customized tour how could we give them up?
That is a run-on justification, but SERIOUSLY don’t you think a little bite of something sweet and cute makes everything even more fabulous? Then you’ve come to the right place! It only takes 5 minutes to enjoy the atmosphere of one of these delightful little shops, to select your tiny cake and to take it back to the Carried Away car to enjoy enroute to your next destination. MMMMM!
p.s. if you want to focus your entire outing on food, check out our San Francisco culinary tour called Snacker’s Delight!

Talk about off the beaten path!
One of the things guests appreciate most on our not-your-usual San Francisco private tours is the fact that we get totally off the tourist path of Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and Union Square.
You can easily enjoy those areas on your own (if would like, we we can give you reccos for how to have a great time in each!); and when you’re with us you can discover things in San Francisco and beyond that you would not find on your own.
Like any major city, many of our best spots require a local’s knowledge to locate and appreciate. Like the spot in the photo above…a fave of the Ladies of Carried Away. If you’re up for a beautiful walk in nature that’s totally off the beaten path, just let us know and we’ll include something like this in your unique San Francisco experience with Carried Away.
Whether it’s a hidden walk in nature, an unique urban winery, visits with local makers, the best local snacks around town, secret gardens, fabulous shops….you name it, we can include them all in your off the beaten path San Francisco experience!
p.s. it’s always worth mentioning: Carried Away is not commercially affiliated with any of the retailers that we visit on our outings. We don’t receive commissions and you are under no pressure to buy anything ever. We will select each destination simply because we believe they have something special to offer you, our guests!

Awesomazing!
We love sharing the insights, impressions and feelings that our guests have when they’re on a San Francisco private tour with us. It is so great to see the city through the eyes of visitors, and last week a lovely young 11 year old traveling with her grandmother from Maine killed us with this:
This city is so awesomazing!
She decided that neither awesome nor amazing on it’s own would do, so she mashed them together and volia her new word was born during her San Francisco custom tour. Since her tour was the City Sampler it was a combo of the natural beauty + the views + the art + the dogs + the people + the food +++ (the list goes on, she experienced alot with us!) that caused her to feel this way about San Francisco.
We hope to inspire you to invent your own word during your Carried Away San Francisco experience!

We love Frisky!
Our latest article in the Welcome to the Neighborhood series is posted on travel writer Nancy D. Brown‘s popular “What A Trip” blog. As San Francisco private tour guides, it’s our job to know what to do and see all around the Bay Area, so Nancy taps into our knowledge from time to time to share our insights with her readers.
This time around the nabe we’re exploring is Sausalito. Even if you’ve been before, hopefully you’ll learn about a few off-the-beaten path things to do and see in Sausalito. If you’d like to book your own San Francisco private tour, including a little adventure over to Sausalito, just give us call! In the meantime, enjoy the article here.

We made the paper!
Here’s what travel writer Rachael Oakes-Ash wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald about her Carried Away San Francisco private tour :
“Carried Away San Francisco offers the best city tour I have done anywhere, bar none — personal, customised and fun”
Why THANK YOU for saying that Rachael! We were so inspired creating Rachael’s outing – she let us know that she was interested in exploring San Francisco trends such as “pop-up”, urban renewal, food and design. We designed Rachel’s Carried Away San Francisco experience to expose her to all of these trends in a hands-on way – she ate, she talked with shop owners, she visited art studios. And most of all she had FUN!! We love FUN!!
Read Rachel’s entire article in the Sydney Morning Herald here. And if you’d like to read what others have said about their Carried Away San Francisco custom tour check out our “people are talking’” section on our website. Enjoy!

Sights and Bites!
You have probably figured out by now that an outing with Carried Away is not your usual San Francisco private tour. To help you understand what an outing with Carried Away is like, a few months ago we started posting photo collages of outings we’ve created for guests. A picture speaks a thousand words, right?
Today’s photo collage is a tiny peek into one guests’ “Sights and Bites” outing, our San Francisco customized tour that includes sights and food. What better way to get to know a city than to sample food along with your sights. Unbelievable how well the Golden Gate Bridge pairs with a cupcake!
We’ll customize this outing to your tastes for both sights and bites – let us plan something special for you!
p.s. if you’d like to see more photo collages look here and here and here. Please let us know if something inspires you!

Greetings Reb!
Renaissance gal and blogger extraordinaire Reb Stevenson from Vancouver Island in Canada spent an afternoon with us a few months ago and has written about her unqiue San Francisco experience on her blog (click here for the article).
Her outing with us was part San Francisco culinary tour and part San Francisco off the beaten track tour. She wrote about one of the areas we explored – the Dogpatch neighborhood where she met artisans and chefs, ate the food of the area and learned what makes this neighborhood tick.
You know we love getting people out in the neighborhoods of San Francisco with our Welcome to the Neighborhood outing. If you’d like for us to create a neighborhood San Francisco custom tour for you, let us know! We’ll curate some neighborhoods based on your interests and show you a fun time!

san francisco historical home
We just love it when we come across the “circa” plaques on homes in the city. We always tell our Carried Away San Francisco private tour guests to keep their eyes peeled as we’re making our way around the city, since these homes are tucked everywhere.
Some are the ornate San Francisco Victorian homes and some are simple cottages like the one in this picture above, and all take you back to an exciting time in our San Francisco history.
We especially love it when one of these old beauties is wedged next to something super modern, edgy and contemporary. During your custom San Francisco tour, you’ll see contrasts like this all over the city. These juxtapositions are one of the things that make San Francisco tick – a respect and love for our vibrant, exciting, raucous history and a need to continue in the same spirit with inventing the next new thing.

and something new!
Come along with us, won’t you?!

Lots going on in the 7x7!
It’s been a while since we’ve shared some of the great things that our guests say when they’re out with us on one of our private tours of San Francisco. It is always interesting to hear how our guests sum up their impressions of the city. A recent fave is:
“Wow, you all manage to pack ALOT into 49 square miles!”
So said a guest after 5 hours on their San Francisco car tour with the Ladies of Carried Away. Because we do our outings in our Carried Away car, we were able to whisk him all around town to create an experience which spoke to his many interests – gardening, design, photography, architecture and food. At the end of his outing, he felt like he’d been exploring a town that was much much bigger than 7×7!

Welcome to the Neighborhood!
If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, you know how we feel about getting out in the neighborhoods during our San Francisco custom tours. We LOVE it. One of the great things about the city is the diverse collection of neighborhoods and it is so much fun to explore each one, soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the things that make each neighborhood unique: the history, cuisine, shops, views, street life and people.
During our “Welcome to the Neighborhood” outing, you’ll have a unique experience in a couple of different neighborhoods – at the end of your outing you may feel like you’ve taken a trip around the world!
Since all of our outings are customized, we’ll have a chat with you to discover which neighborhoods will make for a great match and then we’ll design a personal tour of San Francisco neighborhoods just for you!
p.s. Japantown is one of our current faves; it doesn’t get the attention that Chinatown does which means it’s way less crowded but no less interesting. Ask us about it!
